FAQ

Below are answers to questions that come up most often when booking through Rodavia Malta. If you need something else, the contact page has the numbers and email.

How does the booking process work?

You search, choose the vehicle and extras, then pay a booking advance online. A voucher arrives by email within minutes. That voucher tells you which local supplier will hand over the keys, the desk location, and the terms. On the pick-up day you show the voucher, your licence, passport, and a payment card for the deposit hold. The supplier will explain fuel policy and mileage limits if any, then you drive away.

What does the voucher contain?

The voucher lists the supplier name, desk address, phone number, pick-up and drop-off times, the vehicle group, included insurance, mileage allowance, fuel policy, and any extras you added. It also states the deposit amount that will be held on your card. Print it or keep the PDF on your phone - either works at the counter.

Can I change or cancel my booking?

That depends on the rate you picked. Many reservations allow free cancellation up to a certain number of hours before pick-up; the voucher and confirmation email spell out the deadline. If you need to modify dates or add a driver, email [email protected] or call +356 2137 4482 at least a day ahead so the supplier can adjust the contract.

What documents do I need at the desk?

You must bring a full driving licence held for at least one year - if it is not in Latin script, an International Driving Permit is usually required. Passport or national ID for identity. A credit or debit card in the main driver's name for the deposit hold. And the voucher, of course. Any additional driver needs to present their own licence at the counter.

What are the age and experience rules?

Most suppliers in Malta require the driver to be at least twenty-one and to have held a licence for a minimum of one year. Larger vehicles or premium groups often push the minimum age to twenty-five. If you are under twenty-five, expect a young-driver supplement; the amount shows on the voucher if it applies. Maximum age is rarely enforced as long as the licence remains valid.

How does the fuel policy work?

The standard arrangement is full-to-full: you collect the vehicle with a full tank and return it full. Keep the last fuel receipt in case the desk asks to see it. Enemed and other stations are easy to find. If you return the car with less fuel than agreed, the supplier will charge for the missing litres plus a refuelling fee. Pre-purchase fuel options appear at checkout if available, though full-to-full usually makes more sense on an island you can cross in under an hour.

Can I take the vehicle on the Gozo ferry?

Many contracts permit the twenty-five-minute crossing from Cirkewwa, but not all. The voucher will state whether travel to Gozo is allowed. If it is silent or says "Malta only," ask the supplier at the desk before boarding - some will add permission for a small note on the agreement, others will refuse outright. Do not assume; taking the car across without written consent can void your insurance.

What if the vehicle has a problem during the rental?

The voucher includes the supplier's emergency phone number. Call them immediately if a warning light comes on, you have a flat tyre, or any mechanical issue appears. They will either guide you to the nearest service point or arrange a replacement. For accidents or third-party damage, Maltese law requires you to file a police report if another party is involved; the supplier will explain the claims process at that point.

Where can I pick up and drop off?

The search form shows all available desks. Malta Airport at Luqa is the most popular, about fifteen to twenty minutes from Valletta and Sliema. Some suppliers also have offices in St Paul's Bay, Mellieha, or central Sliema. You can drop the vehicle at a different location if the supplier offers that option; any one-way fee will appear in the booking summary before payment.
